Claude Code Headless Mode: A v2.1.296 Upgrade Checklist

How I diff Claude Code v2.1.296 release notes against headless AgentSpace workers, plus a checklist to run before you upgrade.

AgentSpace worker agents run on Claude Code headless mode: they pick up sprint tasks through the Claude CLI with nobody watching. So every release that changes a CLI flag or permission behavior touches my sprint pipeline directly.

The news

The Claude Code v2.1.296 release notes are out. The list has several fixes for headless sessions. Also, some Bash commands that assign BASH_ARGV0 are no longer auto-approved in the permission check; they now ask for approval.

My take

I don’t skim release notes. I put them next to our headless invocations and diff them. Three things matter for workers: which flags they start with, which commands pass without approval, and how hooks affect the session.

This release has lines touching all three. In a headless session, pressing Esc or interrupting during a UserPromptSubmit hook ended the session; that is fixed. A closed folder’s .mcp.json server starting in a headless session is also fixed. On the permission side, the BASH_ARGV0 change means a worker now waits for approval on a command that used to pass silently. A headless worker that can’t give approval gets stuck right there.

Next step: before upgrading, match the headless, hook, permission and budget lines in the release notes against our worker invocations. I start the upgrade on a single worker, then roll it out to the pool.

On the Day 64 stream I said AgentSpace works best with Claude. That makes CLI behavior as decisive a layer for us as model choice. What doesn’t change: I keep the permission boundary at the tool level. I don’t draw the line by trusting the CLI’s defaults.

What you can do today

If you run a headless pipeline, do this before upgrading:

PROMPT · COPY AND USE
1. Open the release notes, search for "headless"
2. Mark the lines mentioning "hook", "permission", "--max-budget-usd"
3. List the flags in your own invocations side by side, mark each "affected?"
4. Upgrade a single worker first, run one task
5. Check the log for any command stuck waiting on approval
6. Then upgrade the rest of the pool

For any agent pipeline running headless, the release notes are your first checklist before upgrading.
